BACKGROUND //

The sustainable development goal was created by the United Nations in 2012. The aim of this SDG is to produce a set of universal goals that meet the urgent environmental, political, and economic challenges in the world. The SDG that I'm focusing on is the SDG 12 RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION. This SDG12 was defined as a big issue that will affect the environment and development, It created to change the SCP patterns which are Sustainable consumption from production to consumers to decrease the environmental damage when developing the global economy.

GOALS //

  1. BY 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse

  2. By 2030, ensure that people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature

  3. By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along with production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses

  4. Change the way we produce and consume to reduce the ecological footprint on the earth

* Ecological footprint= space that provides resources/ consumes waste Improve the quality of life while reducing environmental degradation and pollution

ISSUE //

Irresponsible consumption in Food wastage

As everyone knows, food is such an important thing that can provide energy to humans to continue surviving. But there is a lot of people having the wrong concept of food satisfaction in their life. Satisfaction will help improve the quality of human life, but only if there is no waste.

TYPES OF FOOD WASTE //

Food loss

- uncontrollable and unavoidable food waste

Wasted food

-Trashed is in fact good, edible food

Food Scraps

-Food waste that is not edible

STATISTIC //

These statistics about food wastage in a different field. The residential and restaurants have a higher percentage compared to others. And these 2 field is related to the consumer. The amount of food wasted by people actually will affect some areas facing a food shortage. Not only that, but food wastage will also affect the environment like greenhouse gas emission (which is the gas that will release when the food scraps are under the ground) and another effect is agricultural landuse because we have to develop a new land to produce more food and this will indirect causes animals to lose their habitat.

ABOUT THE STORY //

The people in the Philippines eating leftover food from others' side. The leftover food is the only food resource for them and they have to wake up in the early morning to go and collect that eatable leftover food from the garbage. The pain point is that they actually still cannot get enough food to eat to live day-to-day. They want to let another side of people to know how they live and hope there is someone who can give them help to improve their life especially the food shortage problem.

HOW MIGHT WE?

OBJECTIVE //

Provide activities that engage users in experiences, indirectly raise public awareness, and encourage them to become responsible consumers. This centre will help to achieve the goals stated by the UN which are halving food waste per capita at global consumption levels by 2030 and significantly reducing waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse.

SITE ANALYSIS //

The site will be the Proton Subang at ss14. The location is quite good because it is located on the corner and near the main road and intersection. Is a noticeable place. Around the site is full of commercial areas like food stores and residential areas. The location is beneficial to my projects and I can take advantage of the food store and residential area.

CONCEPT //

Gold In The Trash. Is inspired by the food wastage and shortage issue. This concept is to convey the message that food waste could be trash in the city but it will be precious things in rural areas, like in the Philippines country's situation. The food waste like food scraps can be reused for other things like an enzyme.

ELEMENT //

Paddy is one of the main foods and it is planted in the soil. Paddy represents Gold and the soil will be the trash because some of the people will think the soil is a dirty thing. And paddy is the symbolism of wealth, health, prosperity, and abundance which are the same as the hope in people in the Philippines. There is an idiom saying "A drowning man will catch at a straw" in Chinese is 救命稻草.

CONCEPT SKETCHES //

The three rice shapes could represent the hope of the Philippines people which is to change life quality and another 2 are to save food and save the environment. This one is the combination of these paddy outlines and the inner part of rice. This is the inner part of the paddy, and I simplified it and make it like the shape of a bowl full of rice and convert it into my concept model.

CUSTOMER JOURNEY MAP //

Once the users step into the centre, their journey in the centre will be served by staff, from counter to activity that they involve. In the journey of the activity, they will know how serious the food waste issue and they will have thinking of how to reuse and reduce the food waste on the earth. Since people might not come again to experience the same things so, the workshop will be the activity that can attract them to come back to the centre again.

- INTERIOR -

1. left side of view from the entrance

2.right side of view from the entrance

3.view from the counter to the seating area

In these spaces, rough materials like asphalt, wood, and concrete are being used but it doesn't make the spaces look dirty and messy which conveys the concept of Gold In The Trash. And the concrete wall is painted in green color that represents balance and harmony which to convey the message of balancing between human and the environment.

View of the workshop and retail shop area

An open space that people can see through once they enter the centre. It will grab the user's attention and interest to involve in the workshop. The gold aluminium materials are used for the frame of display shelves and chair to make space looks a bit luxurious even though other materials is in rough surfaces. This is another view. Here are they conducting the workshop on making enzymes by using food scraps. The shelves behind will be selling all the products created by using food scraps. the shirt is made from food dyeing, the shelves below are selling those decorations made from resin and food scraps. this big shelf will display the enzyme which customers can buy if they want.

VR ROOM - Feel It

An activity that let people really feel the effect of food waste that animal facing, like gets fire in the forest. There are only two types of equipment that will be used in this space which are VR running treadmill and Azana Band. The ceiling is in layering which can help to reduce a bit of echo and the ceiling is pasted with the view when we look up to the sky in the forest. Is trying to let people feel they are in the forest.
